THE STARFISH INSIDE YOU

Whatever could I mean?  Well, I am talking about your liver.  Like the starfish, the liver has the amazing ability to regrow, regenerate.  The liver only needs 25% of itself to completely regrow.  This organ is very important in the bodies fight for homeostasis.  So, we need to take care of this amazing glandular organ, and I know a fantastic herb that can help.  Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is that herb.

The magic comes from the seeds.  The major constituents that are beneficial to the liver are sillychristin, silydianin, silymarin, and silibinin.  These constituents also aid in detoxification, and we all know how important that is.  Here I am preparing a tincture of Milk thistle seed.  The alcohol requirements for a full extraction is 95%.  I am using Everclear which has a percentage of 75.5%.  This is something that is controlled by your state so I will be a little under the recommendations.  To compensate for that, I will let the mixture macerate for a little longer than normal.  First, I need to mill the seeds in my pestle and mortar till it is in powder form.  Next, I will combine the powder, the alcohol in a jar, and let it sit in a cool dark place for about 2 months.  I will be sure to shake it every day to agitate the solution.  When the time has passed, I will strain it, and place into tincture bottles for use.  This is such a good thing to do for your liver, and I highly recommend it.  Another great fact about tincturing your herbs is you expand their shelf life from about 2 years to the rest of your life.  Also, tinctures are extremely expensive, and my little starfish, I want to save you your sand dollars.  😉
